Deep Summer Shade
Monday, August 24, 2009 at 6:35PM I asked my buddies on TQS (The Quilt Show) for suggestions on how to finish this small quilt. It is great to put a question out on the Internet to a virtual quilt guild and get back so many helpful suggestions in less than 24 hours. Each suggestion seemed to build on the last - I will be combining ideas from 11 quilters. I've grouped them into design elements:
Repetition
1. The quilt is 3 blocks wide so use 3 borders
2. At least one of the borders will be the same width as the strips in the blocks
3. One border will be piano keys, triangles or leaves made up from fabrics already in the quilt (this one could count as rhythm also)
Focal Point
4. Add a tree (or seaweed or landscape) by applique, embroidery or quilting.
Contrast
5. Use contrasting thread (maybe metallic) for quilting and/or applique
Balance
6. The focal point will not be perfectly centered but will "grow" from one side of the quilt
I will call it Deep Summer Shade and take the balance of my inspiration from my photos for the Getting Arboreal: A Nature Collection.
Thanks to my buddies for their great ideas: Constance, VernalGrandma, Quilting00, Bridget437, SewDreamy, WhiteWitchCrafts, Margo, Liiddz, 1Ruby, Sanann, and LittleFlower.
